    The Goldilocks Effect of Strategic Human Resource Management? Optimizing the Benefits of a High-Performance Work System Through the Dual Alignment of Vertical and Horizontal Fit

    Although vertical and horizontal fit in strategic human resource management are foundational to the links between a high-performance work system (HPWS) and organizational performance, little is known about how these two fits interact to affect organizational performance. We address this shortcoming while also advancing knowledge on each type of fit. We offer a more nuanced examination of vertical fit (which has typically been assessed with respect to organizations\u27 broad strategic types) by focusing on the alignment of an HPWS with an organization\u27s market entry timing mode—a key element of strategy. We propose that among organizations pursuing new product development, the effect of an HPWS on organizational performance is most positive under a fast-follower entry timing, followed by a first-mover and finally a fence-sitter entry timing. We then hypothesize that the benefit of vertical fit is magnified when the complementary human resources practices comprising an HPWS are implemented with greater internal consistency (or with similar intensities) across the ability, motivation, and opportunity domains—reflecting a positive interaction between vertical and horizontal fit in predicting the effectiveness of an HPWS. Analyses of four-wave nationally representative panel data yield strong support for our dual-alignment model of SHRM

    Implant selection for successful reverse total shoulder arthroplasty

    Reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (RTSA) emerged as a new concept of arthroplasty that does not restore normal anatomy but does restore function. It enables the function of the torn rotator cuff to be performed by the deltoid and shows encouraging clinical outcomes. Since its introduction, various modifications have been designed to improve the outcome of the RTSA. From the original cemented baseplate with peg or keel, a cementless baseplate was designed that could be fixed with central and peripheral screws. In addition, a modular-type glenoid component enabled easier revision options. For the humeral component, the initial design was an inlay type of long stem with cemented fixation. However, loss of bone stock from the cemented stem hindered revision surgery. Therefore, a cementless design was introduced with a firm metaphyseal fixation. Furthermore, to prevent complications such as scapular notching, the concept of lateralization emerged. Lateralization helped to maintain normal shoulder contour and better rotator cuff function for improved external/internal rotation power, but excessive lateralization yielded problems such as subacromial notching. Therefore, for patients with pseudoparalysis or with risk of subacromial notching, a medial eccentric tray option can be used for distalization and reduced lateralization of the center of rotation. In summary, it is important that surgeons understand the characteristics of each implant in the various options for RTSA. Furthermore, through preoperative evaluation of patients, surgeons can choose the implant option that will lead to the best outcomes after RTSA.Level of evidence: IV

    Development of selective blockers for Ca2+-activated Cl- channel using Xenopus laevis oocytes with an improved drug screening strategy

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Ca<sup>2+</sup>-activated Cl<sup>- </sup>channels (CaCCs) participate in many important physiological processes. However, the lack of effective and selective blockers has hindered the study of these channels, mostly due to the lack of good assay system. Here, we have developed a reliable drug screening method for better blockers of CaCCs, using the endogeneous CaCCs in <it>Xenopus laevis </it>oocytes and two-electrode voltage-clamp (TEVC) technique.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Oocytes were prepared with a treatment of Ca<sup>2+ </sup>ionophore, which was followed by a treatment of thapsigargin which depletes Ca<sup>2+ </sup>stores to eliminate any contribution of Ca<sup>2+ </sup>release. TEVC was performed with micropipette containing chelerythrine to prevent PKC dependent run-up or run-down. Under these conditions, Ca<sup>2+</sup>-activated Cl<sup>- </sup>currents induced by bath application of Ca<sup>2+ </sup>to oocytes showed stable peak amplitude when repetitively activated, allowing us to test several concentrations of a test compound from one oocyte. Inhibitory activities of commercially available blockers and synthesized anthranilic acid derivatives were tested using this method. As a result, newly synthesized <it>N</it>-(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)anthranilic acid with trifluoromethyl group (-CF<sub>3</sub>) at <it>para </it>position on the benzene ring showed the lowest IC<sub>50</sub>.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Our results provide an optimal drug screening strategy suitable for high throughput screening, and propose <it>N</it>-(4-trifluoromethylphenyl)anthranilic acid as an improved CaCC blocker.</p

    Adenosine A2A Receptor Agonist, Polydeoxyribonucleotide Treatment Improves Locomotor Function and Thermal Hyperalgesia Following Neuropathic Pain in Rats

    Purpose Lithotomy position has been widely used in the various urologic surgery. Occasionally sensory and motor problems of the lower extremities are occurred due to the lithotomy position and these deficits may be related with sciatic nerve injury (SNI). Inflammatory process is a factor to induce functional impairment after SNI. Therefore, we evaluated the role of adenosine A2A receptor agonists, polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) showing anti-inflammatory effect on locomotor function following SNI in rats. Methods Sciatic nerve was compressed with surgical clips for 1 minute after exposing of right sciatic nerve. After 3 days of SNI, PDRN (2, 4, and 8 mg/kg) was applied to the damaged area of sciatic nerve once daily for 10 days. Walking track analysis was conducted for locomotor function and plantar test was performed for thermal pain sensitivity. Level of cyclic adenosine-3´,5´-monophosphate (cAMP) were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. Western blot analysis was performed for tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-α, interleukin (IL)-1β, cAMP response element binding protein (CREP), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF). Immunofluorescence for neurofilament was also conducted. Results Locomotor function was decreased and thermal pain sensitivity was increased by SNI. SNI enhanced proinflammatory cytokines’ production, such as TNF-α and IL-1β, while suppressed CREP phosphorylation and cAMP level. SNI also reduced the expression of VEGF and neurofilaments. However, treatment with PDRN inhibited proinflammatory cytokines’ production and upregulated CREP phosphorylation and cAMP expression. PDRN also enhanced the expression of VEGF and neurofilaments. As a result, PDRN improved locomotor function and alleviated thermal hyperalgesia after SNI. Conclusions PDRN has shown potential to be used as an effective treatment for neuropathic pain

    Mesothelial Cyst of the Round Ligament Mimicking a Metastasis: a Case Report

    A mesothelial cyst of the round ligament is a rare cause of an inguinal mass. Clinically, it is frequently misdiagnosed as one of commoner diseases such as an inguinal hernia, femoral hernia, lipoma, and lymphadenopathy upon physical examination. Some previous reports elaborated the sonographic features of a mesothelial cyst of the round ligament. However, to our knowledge, few reports have described the CT features of a mesothelial cyst. We illustrated here the sonographic and multidetector CT features of a case of a mesothelial cyst of the round ligament that presented as an inguinal palpable mass and mimicked a metastasis in a patient with a Sertoli-Leydig cell tumor of the ovary
